The Pacific Ocean

I woke up this morning out of sorts. I did a 3:30-7:00 a.m. watch that was very easy, went back to bed, and woke up at 9:00 not wanting to get back out. I had finished a wonderful book, City of Thieves, by David Benioff that my friend Jo-Ann Beserra recommended and I don’t know if that was weighing on me or what. Regardless, I was mopey.

This is my first big ocean crossing and it’s a huge, remote chunk of water. It’s gorgeous – blue, grey, and white – and there is no where to get off. We are a little boat bopping around out here and I feel both taken care of by our vessel (and nature when it’s happy) and vulnerable. Also, it can be pretty damn annoying living on a boat while crossing the Pacific. The weight and space reducing AeroPress? Sure, it makes good coffee, but it also has 5 separate parts to deal with that can go scooting everywhere. The first morning I dumped half of the grounds on the counter and then poured most of the scalding water on my hand and arm. I’ve transitioned to tea. We’ve made some mistakes with our gear, but will get it worked out. Also, if I have to wear my green pants, purple pullover, and white vest much longer, I’m not sure what’s going to happen. I may not be able to get dressed and leave the boat. Tim reminds me that the first two years he knew me I wore the same pair of jeans and Okoboji sweatshirt every day. I guess I liked those items better.

My ranting over, it was a pretty day today, I did put on shorts (with the purple pullover and white vest) and dinner was tasty so I’m optimistic that tomorrow will be a good day especially since it looks like we have at least 24 hours more of somewhat mild weather. Yowzer. I’m glad I didn’t drag a poor dog along on this crossing.
Easter Island will be great to visit, but I’m really holding out for Gambier (May 1) with the Beserras and then Tahiti with our kids!

Adios,
Jer
