Jer:
Agility left Fiji early this afternoon. We checked out of Vuda Point along with at least 10 other boats this morning. There can be severe weather along the top of NZ so people are diligent about checking forecasts and leaving during good weather windows leading to a mass exodus today.
It has been a very calm passage with 10-15kt winds and quiet seas. Things will probably die down even more before they pick up, but for now we are sailing fine.
Fiji was a wonderful place. There are tons of anchorages and a big variety of experiences. Savusavu where we checked in is a bustling town that didn’t feel touristy at all. There were shops, restaurants, nice walks, and we met a local family that I mentioned in an earlier post. Tim sent them a package before we left Fiji with an Agility shirt, iphone, a brooch for the mom, and a book and Tom and Jerry toys for the daughter (she loves Tom and Jerry cartoons). Apparently, it’s very difficult to get Apple products in Fiji and it’s not unusual to have items stolen out of packages so I certainly hope it arrives. After we departed Savusavu we sailed to some smaller islands where we presented sevusevu (a presentation of kava to the village leaders who then grant permission to use their island). Then we hit some of the more touristy spots including Blue Lagoon, Musket Cove, and Port Denerau. The Fijian people are very kind, generous, cheerful, and shockingly good at name recognition. We feel fortunate that we had 6 weeks to spend in such a beautiful country and also to share that with my mom and cousin. It’s also exciting to be heading towards NZ, a country that I’ve only heard good things about. I hope we love it!
